If the microSD card is unreadable through a peripheral device, the card may use an incompatible file system, such as NTFS, or it may not be formatted at all. Data corruption could also be the culprit. Your device likely contains a formatting utility, so try that option first by following the device's instruction manual. Failing that, a computer will solve compatibility issues. If the card appears unreadable in the computer, it may not have a drive letter assigned, but using Disk Management to format the card will solve that problem.
1.
Insert the microSD card into your computer card reader. If you do not have a card reader, use a USB card reader to add this capability. If your card reader does not accept microSD cards, insert the card into an SD card adapter to convert it to standard SD card size. When doing so, make sure the adapter's lock slider is in the unlocked position.
2.
Click the 'Start' button, right-click 'Computer' and select 'Manage' to open the Computer Management dialog box.

4.
Right-click the microSD card from the list of storage devices and select 'Format.'
5.
Click the 'File System' drop-down menu and select the file system you wish to use. If the card will be used in personal electronic devices, choose 'FAT32' or 'FAT.' If the card will only be used on your computer, choose 'NTFS.'
Things Needed
- USB card reader
- SD card adapter
Tip
- Entering a volume label for your microSD card during formatting assigns a name next to the drive letter in Windows Explorer. This name makes recognizing the card easier if you have numerous drives listed.
